Lovely new silverware and Micah's garnish

Marriage Certificate

It's official! We just got the certificate in the mail.

10 Things We've Learned in 4 Weeks of Marriage (Today!)

- Always keep the receipt after checking your bags at the airport.
- Until they pass an Indiana Clean Air Act, it’s an infringement of people’s rights to designate smoking and non smoking apartments. Even our new apartment is quite smokey sometimes because there's a guy who smokes in the hall.
- How to make really tasty stuffing (Mom's recipe!), and how much pine nuts cost ($6.99 in a little jar or $5.49 a cup in the produce section, but it’s definitely worth it).
- Red is best, especially when decorating living rooms and kitchens. Buying a red blender can be one of the most thrilling experiences of your life.
- Plants can only fill up so much empty space.
- When you have sufficient motivation (dinner guests), it takes only a few hours to clear a living room full of so many boxes and things that you can’t see the floor.
- You can never have too many boxes of cereal in the house. Between 15-20 is a good number to start with; when we get our food storage going we’ll need to add some more.
- There are fewer than 1,000 Bactrian camels left in the Gobi desert, and they can drink 50 gallons of water in one sitting (Courtesy of our new Planet Earth game).
- Rachel has a list for everything.
- Micah doesn’t tolerate blue pens, but only feels good about leaving the house if he has one pencil and one black pen in his pocket.

Grandpa Attacks Sprinkler

As you may know, over a week ago, Grandpa Evans fiercely kicked a sprinkler which jumped in his path. He fell, as he said, "Like a sack of potatoes." Since then, his leg and ankle have not healed. Today he learned that, besides breaking a small bone near his ankle, he has torn some ligaments. Therefore, this Thursday, he will have surgery where a Dr. Green will insert some screws into his leg, as well as cast it. He is expected to be on crutches for 6 weeks. Please keep him in your prayers, and let him know that you are thinking of him!

A Scottish Boyhood

Last night our book group reviewed a book Cynthia recommended called Ranald Bannerman's Boyhood, by George MacDonald, who greatly influenced CS Lewis. It is a tender story of a far away and long ago kind of childhood such that we may have still in our bones somewhere, but which is so different from our lives today. Those of you that read aloud will want to consider this one. Maybe Andrew can do as Cynthia, and read it in a Scottish accent. I would love to have read it to all of you. Happy reading!

Behind the Dustbin

Hi Girlsies,
Today I was reading some rhymes to Abraham, and I found this fun little rhyme I wanted to share with you.

Down behind the dustbin
I met a dog called Jim.
He didn't know me
And I didn't know him.

Inauguration Day 2009

Laurel was laughing at me as I was dropping her off at school today. She said she could watch the inauguration without crying. I challenged her to do that when she was as old as I am. This is the most exciting presidential inauguration of my life (even though we, including the girls, attended Clinton's first inauguration--anyone remember that?).

I know that we have trouble ahead in our country and around the world, but I believe that, at least for now, we have a president who understands what sort of work, sacrifice, virtue and unity we need. And I believe that he is sincere, and wise. While wickedness will increase before the millennium, light will also grow brighter. Regardless of what comes, today I saw with spiritual eyes the potential beauty of all the Lord's children united without enmity. It was a heavenly vision, reminding me of what I just read in 4th Nephi: "There were no contentions and disputations among them, and every man did deal justly one with another. And they had all things common among them; therefore there were not rich and poor, bond and free, but they were all made free, and partakers of the heavenly gift." Let's choose hope, and "starting today. . .pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin the work of re-making America again!"

Special Need

Please pray for Rick Graham, who had cancer surgery today.

Grandma's Globe Pays Off

Laurel went to the 7th and 8th grade ELP Geography Bee for extra credit and got third place! Did you know that Myrtle Beach was in South Carolina? Neither did she, but she got it right.

Cloe Da Doe

Girlsies,
Remember one of the best ways to keep a bedroom or kitchen looking neat is to close drawers and cupboards as you use them. And--don't work in the kitchen above an open drawer.

Well-trained baby

Well, I had to tell a story, and I thought this would be the best place.
Abraham only had one BM all week, and it was during the one hour when someone else was watching him. Now you can't beat that.

Take Time to be Holy

I'm sure most of you have heard this song before (the MoTab has sung it), but we are singing it in ward choir (good choice, Andrew!), and I just love the lyrics! So, I wanted to share them.

Take time to be holy,
speak oft with thy Lord;
abide in him always,
and feed on his word.
Make friends of God's children,
help those who are weak,
forgetting in nothing
his blessing to seek.

Take time to be holy,
the world rushes on;
spend much time in secret
with Jesus alone.
By looking to Jesus,
like him thou shalt be;
thy friends in thy conduct
his likeness shall see.

Take time to be holy,
let him be thy guide,
and run not before him,
whatever betide.
In joy or in sorrow,
still follow the Lord,
and, looking to Jesus,
still trust in his word.

Take time to be holy,
be calm in thy soul,
each thought and each motive
beneath his control.
Thus led by his spirit
to fountains of love,
thou soon shalt be fitted
for service above.

Grandma Galli's Trick

We're trying an old family trick for getting the bowels moving- prunes. They're so durable, that even if Abe doesn't like the taste that well, they still make a great teething toy.

When In Doubt

To cut down on clutter, discard whatever is not longer useful immediately, including envelopes (unless you need the address), junk mail, old toothbrushes, dead pens, dead razors, etc.

Great Sugarless Treat

In a blender, put one large spoonful of Adams (non-sweetened) peanut butter, 1/2 a banana (frozen is best), 1/2 cup milk (soy is best), and if you really want a treat, a spoonful of sugarless cocoa powder (for baking). It's delish!
